As good as confirmation of an Apple/Verizon phone
August 31, 2009 by iarmstrong
Not much has been reported on the Apple/Verizon deals since a flurry of rumors hit the net back in April. As reported by Engadget, CDMA is a pretty small percentage of the world market; unless you happen to be named Verizon.
So imagine my surprise when I ran into this on Apple’s job board?

Job Title:
* iPhone Senior RF Driver Engineer
Qualifications include:
* Strong knowledge and experience with UMTS or CDMA RF systems
In fact, computerjobs.com lists the posting as an “ASAP” hire date: http://www.computerjobs.com/job_display.aspx?jobid=2204465)
Go on Apple, try and deny it this time. The rest of us will just wait around for AT&T to go away and write it off as a terrible wireless experience we would rather not talk about.

Before you get all excited about Verizon, I have had my Crackberry for over 12 days now – I’m getting about 1% of incoming text messages. This has been escalated to the highest levels but I have not had a resolution yet (despite 5 visits to the store and 5 other calls to tech support)!
I love the reception but being an avid texter (as most of us are), it sucks ass not to be able to receive texts, especilly since I am able to send them!!
It’s a frustrating problem and all carriers have their own issues. Being unable to send SMS and being pegged at a slow 3G speed (by half) as compared to the others though – that’s rough.
I hope you get your phone fixed too.
I had a bet with a colleague about 2 years ago on when we would see NFC (the technology underlying MasterCard Paypass) in phones. The technology was ready at the time. I said no way would it be in this market in two years. It wasn’t a technology issue. It was a negotiation issue. The Operators( AT&T, Verizon etc. ) are used to calling the shots. So are the banks. The end result. We still don’t have it today.
Verizon is stricter than AT&T. Apple does things one way. Apple’s. I think we are further from IPhone to Verizon than this job listing indicates.
Now if the apple tablet rumors are true? that is new ground and maybe easier. A Macbook with built-in 3G easier even still.
Will be interesting to watch
Andy,
While I think there is substance to the 3G notebook, I don’t think Apple would need an in-house driver engineer to make it happen. There are already several 3G Verizon products on the market that integrate with OSX over USB/Firewire. The only plausible alternative to an Apple Phone by Verizon that I could come up with (and I thought about this for a while on BART this morning) has to do with the Justice Department investigation.
It is plausible, though not probable, that Apple is doing work to prove that they are, in fact, planning to open up the market. In the aftermath of denying Google Voice on the app store, this could be a way of avoiding a fine.
That notion still seems a little far-fetched though. A Senior RF Driver Engineer is not a low-end hire.
